All my tract of land adjoining the town of Dumfries containing about 450 acres on which track of land my father Mason Bennett now liveth, together with my stock and furniture, unto my said father Mason Bennett. After his decease to my mother Mary Bennett. After the decease of my father and mother unto my sister Mary Devier the wife of Hugh Devier of Rockingham County (upon her paying unto my brother Francis Cannon L 100). All my lands on Elkhorn upon the waters of the Kentucky unto my brothers John Cannon and Francis Cannon equally. 8/16/1834, Stafford Co., Va. Elizabeth Adie of said county, aged 74, declares she knew William Bennett who went into the naval service as alieutenant in the ship called the Gen. Mercer which was built at the mouth of Quantico Creek. William Bennett was born and raised in the neighborhood of Dumfries. Elizabeth was present when the ship was launched. William never married. He left half brothers Luke Cannon, John Cannon and Francis Cannon. Francis died without issue; John and Luke diedleaving issue. Luke and John lived near Dumfries. Luke served in the Revolution as an officer; she saw him once coming up from Hampton or York.
3/23/1839, Prince William Co., Va. Susanna (X) Tansill declares she knew William Bennett son of Mason and Mary Bennett late of Prince William County near Dumfries. Three or four years after the beginning of the war he was commissioner aboard a ship of war in which he left home.The first children of Mrs. Bennett, formerly Mrs. Cannon, were Francis, John and Luke Cannon. She was older than Mrs. Bennett's children.
3/30/1839, Prince William Co., Va. The heirs at law by virtue of the last will of William Bennett give power of attorney to Washingrton H. Nowell of Prince William County to claim land and money. Signed by Chas. G. Cannon, Elizabeth Cannon, Sarah Edith Phillips (?), Jno. B. Cannon.
5/8/1839, Charles Brent Attwell of Loudon Co., Va., formerly of Prince William County, declares he was born in Dumfries 5 Sept., 1765. He knew William Bennett son of Mason Bennett and always understood he entered the U.S. Navy when young under a commission. He saw him frequently, dressed in military niform recruiting marines in Dumfries. Attwell was about 12 or 13 when Bennett entered service. He was half-brother of John, Francis and Luke Cannon, the children of Mary Cannon who after the death of her husband married Mason Bennett.
