William Lyon was born about 1698 in Angus, Scotland, near Glam's Castle. He was a Jacobite soldier, served under the Earl of Mar. He was captured in 1715 by the English at Preston and sent to Liverpool. In 1716, he was sent as an unindentured prisoner of war from Liverpool to Culpeper County, Virginia, on the ship "Elizabeth & Ann".
His wife was Elizabeth, and their children were Alexander, Thomas and James (letter from Mary K Stine, who went into the DAR under his grandson Jacob) On the 2nd day of September, 1803 ALEXANDER LYON (the father of Jacob Lyon) and his two brothers, Thomas Lyon and James Lyon came together to settle the estate of their father, William Lyon who died in May, 1802. Their mother, Elizabeth Lyon, was living at the time on the land in Culpepper County. ALEXANDER LYON was then living In CASWELL COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA and his two brothers were still living in Culpepper County, Virginia. Alexander and Thomas sold their part of the land to James for 260 pounds.
