      Coleman Douglas Bennett was born 7 August 1873, the youngest child ofJonathan and Mildred Bailey Bennett of Pittsylvania County, and grandson of Reuben Bennett, a brother of Colonel Coleman D. Bennett (1806-1870). He attended Clifton Academy, and upon completion of his course work he was employed by George E. Coleman and Company in connection with their tobacco warehouses. He also briefly served as deputy treasurer of Pittsylvania County. Bennett soon turned his attention to a medical career and enrolled in the University College of Medicine in Richmond, Virginia, where he graduated with a degree in medicine in 1905. Immediately following graduation Bennett entered into practice in Gretna, Virginia, but stayed only a short while before he started a new practice in Renan, Virginia. He remained in Renan for five years and thenmoved to Campbell County where he practiced for a brief time. Bennettalso worked as a post-graduate at New York Polyclinic College before permanently settling in Chatham, Virginia. During World War I Bennett enlisted in the United States Navy and was commissioned a junior lieutenant. He was stationed at Hampton Roads for a short time and then wasassigned to the overseas Transportaion Company?s Norfolk division. Hemarried Sallie E. Hogan in 1905 and the couple had one son, Hubert, in 1907.
