	Bastardy Bond. On 21 Feb 1843, Elizabeth Rollins was brought before the Caswell County Court to answer a complaint that she had borne an illegitimate child. Elizabeth refused to swear an oath and posted a bond with Nicholas Smith to provide for support of the child. In the 1860 census, Nicholas Smith is enumerated in the household next door to where Elizabeth Rowland is living.

	In the 1860 census, Elizabeth Rowland is enumerated in the household after her father's household headed by D. Ragsdale. Two of her children, S. H. and W. P. Roland are listed in her father's household. D. Ragsdale is probably Dasha Ragsdale, black, female, who is also a neighbor in the 1850 census. The household immediately following Elizabeth's in the cenusus is headed by Nicholas Smith, the man who signed the Bastardy Bond with Elizabeth. Could Nicholas be Elizabeth's baby daddy?
