After the war, he married Nancy Baker, daughter of Henry Baker, in Stokes Co., NC on 13 Feb. 1820. William Cannon appears in the 1820 census in Stokes Co., NC. Henry Baker died in Monroe Co. IN in 1838. His estate lists his children, who include Nancy Cannon and Dosha (Docia) Smith. Dosha Baker, sister of Nancy Baker, was the first wife of Joseph Smith who subsequently married Elizabeth Cannon. There is a marriage bond in Stokes Co for the marriage of Elizabeth Cannon and Joseph Smith. Joseph Smith and Elizabeth Cannon remained in Stokes Co.

Nancy Cannon applied for a widow's pension for her husband's service in the War of 1812 on June 28, 1878. In it she wrote:
