- On December 16, 1793, William Sanders purchased from John Buckley, both residents of Pittsylvania County, 273 acres of land, for 50 pounds and located "on the south fork of Stinking River". Pittsylvania County. VA, Deed Book 9, p. 469
In the years 1793 and 1794 "William Sanders" paid the Land Tax on this land with the Land Tax record indicating it was land purchased from Buckley. In the year 1795 "William Saunders" paid the Land Tax with the record indicating the land has been purchased from Buckley.Thereafter, from 1796 through 1802 "William Saunders" paid the annual Land Tax on this land. On July 17, 1815, Francis Saunders was granted letters of administration for the estate of William Saunders,dec'd. Pittsylvania County Court Orders Book 16, p. 519.
On September 18, 1815, the Inventory and Appraisal of the estate of William Saunders, dec'd, was ordered recorded. Pittsylvania County Court Orders Book 17, p. 39
At the February, 1816, Session of the Pittsylvania County Chancery Court, a lawsuit was brought to sell the land of William Saunders, dec'd, located on Stinking River. The following heirs were named in this lawsuit and in such a legal action all heirs of William Saunders would have had to be named:

It is stated in the lawsuit that Joseph, Baker, Micajah, Amos, George and Coleman were "infants under the age of 21 years" and that Francis Saunders had been appointed their guardian." Therefore these six children were born after 1795. Pittsylvania County Court Orders Book 17, 1815-1816, p. 95
A deed dated October 21, 1828 states that "...it was so procluded in that at the October Session of said Court in the year 1825 it was decreed by the said Court that Meacon A. Shelton, Griffith Dickinson, Sr., Avery Mustain and John West who were thereby appointed commissioners for the purpose should proceed to sell the tract of land whereon William Saunders, dec'd, died lying on both sides of the South fork of Stinking River......and whereon ....did on the 17th day of November in the year 1825 proceed to sell said land.....and the aforesaid Joseph Saunders became the purchaser thereof at the price of $260.40 ......and whereas the aforesaid Court at their January term 1828 ordered and decreed that the said Meacon A. Shelton.....convey on behalf of the aforesaid Plaintiffs and Defendants in the aforesaid suit unto the aforesaid Joseph Saunders, the purchaser thereof, the aforesaid tract or parcel of land of 168 acres."
