Northern Division- Frederick Stier's household includes his mother Nancy. His wife, though still alive, is not living with Frederick. Instead, she is living with her daughter Martha and son-in-law Thomas Combs in the household of William Corum. It appears that Frederick and his wife Elizabeth separated prior to the time of the 1860 census.

Wentworth- The evidence indicates that the female identified in the census as Susan Wray, 38, is the mistress of Fredrick Stier and that the children named Mollie and Nancy are his daughters by Susan Wray. The 1880 census states that Frederick Stiers is a widower. Mollie and Nancy are listed as daughters of Fredrick Stier, but their last names are given as Wray. The marriage records for Mollie and Nancy give the last name as Stier. Following Frederick's death, his administrator instituted legal proceedings against Susan Wray to evict her from the home where Frederick Stiers lived prior to his death. The eviction proceedings indicate that Susan Wray had no dower rights or other legal rights. Therefore, she was not the wife of Frederick Stier.

Frederick Stier was apparently born in Rockingham Co., NC. His father, Daniel Stier, moved to Rockingham Co., NC sometime before 1800 and is listed in the 1800 census. Fredrick Stier appears in every census from 1830 to 1880. He died in 1885 at the age of 85.
Fredrick Stier married Elizabeth Cunningham about January 15, 1827. They are listed together in the 1850 census. Frederick and Elizabeth appear to have seprated prior to the 1860 census.
Note: The female in the 10 to 15 age group is likely Martha Stier, who was born about 1826 and married Thomas Combs in 1850. The older female is his wife Elizabeth Cunningham. The 5 to 10 male would be John N. Stier. The 15 to 20 males could be William Stiers who appears in the 1860 census and Bedford Stires who appears in the 1850 census.
