    • William Kennon first appears in Caswell Co. in 1783 when he purchased 334 acres of land on Lick’s Fork of Moon’s Creek from Asail Roberts on 17 June 1783 adjacent James Richardson. A John Kennon appears at the same time and also purchased land from Asail Roberts on Lick’s Fork Creek. William married Ursley Perkins (formerly Richarson) four months later. It seems a safe bet that Ursley is related to James Richardson. He could possibly be a brother or uncle. It is known that William had two sons, Richard and John, by his wife Ursley Richardson.

On 22 July 1811, Joel Canon deeded property to both William Cannon and Reuben Cannon. William Cannon received 100 acres at Hogan’s Creek. (Caswell Co. Deed Book Q, pg. 276-77). Reuben received 86 acres at Hogan’s Creek adjacent William Cannon (Caswell Co. Deed Book Q, pg. 277). Joel Cannon’s relationship to William Kennon is presently unknown. It is possible that he is a brother. Joel Cannon died in Caswell Co., NC. He left a will date 21 Dec. 1829, which was probated in 1832. The will names daughters Dorcas Scott, Sallly Murphy, Anne Powell, and sons Elijah Canon and James Cannon.

William Cannon died in Caswell Co. before 17 Nov. 1852. On that date

There is a estate record in the NC Division of Archives for William Kennon. The estate records included an administrator’s bond for Richard R. Kennon to serve as administrator for William Kennon’s estate. Richard R. Kennon presented an accounting for the estate to the court on 26 Dec. 1854 showing $2127.50 from the sale of land, $398.77 from the sale of personal property, and $646.57 in payments for debts and expenses. Estate Records of William Kennon, NC Division of Archives and History, C.R. 020.508.7 (Jordan - Kerr, James).

      Tax Records

William Cannon fist appears on the Caswell Co. tax lists in 1784 with 524 acres near Moon’s Creek. He is in the Caswell District. He paid 1 white poll and 3 black polls. The land listed likely included the 334 acres he purchasd from Asail Roberts and 196 acres that he acquired by his marriage to Ursley Perkins. He is on the tax list each year through 1795; always in the Caswell District. In 1795 there is also listed a William Cannon Jr. I have not seen the tax lists for 1796 - 1804. William Cannon is also on the tax lists in 1805 and 1806. Caswell Co. Tax Lists, North Carolna State Archives, C.R. 020.701.1-701.3
