He was the son of Capt. Joseph Royall Jr. and Mary Epes. In 1698 his father “for natural love and affection” gave Joseph Royall 50 acres. Henrico Co. Deeds & Wills, 1697 - 1704, pg. 131. Joseph Royall, likely the son, paid quit rents on 783 acres in 1704, and the father on 260 acres in Charles City County. English Duplicates of Lost Virginia Records (des Cognets), pp. 219, 162. Joseph secured a patent to 900 acres on the north side of the Appomattox River 22 January 1717/8. Patent Book 10, pg. 347. Henrico County taxed Capt. Joseph Royall on ten levies and 1,200 acres in 1736. Henrico County - Southside, 1736, Viriginia Colonial Abstracts (Fleet), pg. 382. He was sheriff in 1729. In 1735 Joseph gave 500 acres on the north side of the Appomattox River “for love and affection to my sons William & John Royall.” John received the upper 200 acres and William, the lower 300. Henrico Co. Deeds & Wills, 1725-1737, pg. 496. Joseph left a will in Henrico County in 1748 (will dated 6 Feb. 1747/8, recorded April 1748). Henrico Co. Deeds & Wills, 1744, pg. 376.
