William Cannon reportedly served in the 5th Regiment, North Carolina Militia from November 28, 1814 to February 22, 1815 under Capt. John L. Hauser. He, and later his widow, attempted to acquire bounty land for this service. This resulted in a considerable amount of correspondence and affidavits from friends and family. From that file we can piece together some of his life. In 1850, while living in Monroe County, Indiana, he applied for 80 acres of bounty land. On August 21, 1851, his claim was denied for 80 acres but approved for 40 acres. On April 17, 1855 he received 40 acres in Johnson County, Iowa. William Cannon appears in the 1820 census in Stokes Co., NC. His household includes 1 male and 1 female, both 26-45. Presumably this is William Cannon and his wife Nancy, who married in 1820. 1820 Census, Stokes Co., NC, Roll M33_84, p. 337.
William Cannon and his wife Nancy are living in Monroe Co. IN is 1850. he is 57 years old and she is 58 years old. Their household includes Elizabeth Cannon (24), George Cannon (22), Tamsey E. Cannon (26), and Nancy A. Cannon (12). 1850 Census, Monroe Co., IN, Roll M432_161, p. 346.
William Cannon and his wife Nancy are living in Cass Co., IA in the 1860 census. William is 67 years old and Nancy is 68 years old. The census indicates that William was born in Virginis and Nancy was born in North Carolina. 1860 Census, Cass Co., IA. Roll M653_313, p. 25.
William Cannon’s widow applied for a widow’s pension on June 28, 1878. In it she wrote: “She further states that the following is a full description of her said husband at the time of his enlistment, viz: 22 years of age, occupation, Laborer, was born in Henry Co Virginia, height about 5 ft 10 in, Black hair, Dark complection, Gray eyes, weight about 140 lbs.” Elizabeth Cannon Smith, the sister of William Cannon, gave an affidavit attesting to the marriage of Nancy Baker and William Cannon.
