  • Notes

    • Hugh Rudd, who died last year in Georgia, did a lot of research on the family of John Rudd, Sr., and Avis Whitaker (various spellings -- Whitacre, Whitacur, Whitteker, etc.) of Henrico and Chesterfield counties in Virginia. He found a reference to a John Rudd of Liverpool, who may be the one who married Avis Whitaker.

24 Oct 1698 Rudd, John, of Liverpool, a webster (weaver) listed to go to Virginia as an apprentice servant for 4 years on a ship called St. John the Baptist, captained by Nicholas Franch (perhas French). [From: List of emigrants to America from Liverpool, 1697-1707, found in the back of vols. 5 and 7 of the Records of the Corporation of Liverpool, deposited in the Town clerk's office, Leasing department, Liverpool. Reprinted in the The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vols. 64, 65], Boston: The New England Historic Genealogical Society at the Robert Henry Eddy Memorial Rooms, 1913, page 14.]

Since no other John Rudd (various spellings) is known to have arrived in Virginia around this time, the following record may be the same man.

24 Oct 1701       RUDD, John; Book 9, p. 51. Capt. William HUNT, 4342 acs.; Chas. City Co.; on both sides of Nottoway Riv., 24 Oct 1701, p. 390. < this is very long and includes the Trans. of 87 pers; includes John RUDD >. Note that Avis arrived on the same day:
