- Two facts indicate that Eliza Herron listed in the 1870 census of Macon Co., NC is the widow of Alfred Herron of Oconee Co., SC. First, the children of Eliza Herron match the names of the children of Alfred. Second, the Herrons of Macon Co. are associated with the same families as the Herrons of Oconee and Rabun Counties.
In the 1850 census Elizabeth and Alfred had three children, Sarah, Martha, and Joshua. In 1870, Sarah is still living in the same household as her mother. Joshua is listed in the household of John Barnes, aneighbor of Elizabeth. Martha is presumably married or deceased.
10 year old Jacob Manley Teague is the son of Manley Teague and MillyBarnes. Manley and Milly Teague are neighbors of William (brother-in-law of Alfred) & Nelly Herron in the 1850 census of Rabun Co., GA. William and Nelly Herron are buried in the Wolf Pit Cemetery in Oconee Co., SC. where many of the Herrons are buried. Also, Bethana Herron, niece of Alfred, married George Barnes and also resided in the same area of Rabun Co. Deed records indicate that George Barnes and Manley Teague owned adjoining properties (Deed Book I, p. 108) in Macon Co., NC. near the Georgia line (Deed Book H, p. 80). In 1870 Milly Barnes Teague, widow of Manley Teague, is living in the household of Eliza Herron of Macon Co., NC. Further, Eliza's son, Joshua Herron, is living in the household of John Barnes. This connection of Eliza Herron to the Barnes & Teagues leads to the conclusion that Eliza Herron is from Oconee Co. and is the widow of Alfred Herron.
Jacob Manley Teague died June 13, 1931 in Pendleton, SC. His parents are named on a data sheet kept by McDougald Bleckley Mortuary. Jacobis buried at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church Cemetery.
