  The parents of Betsy Thomas are currently unknown. A Michael Thomas died in 1817 in Rockingham Co. naming a daughter Betsy in his will. However, an agreement recorded in Deed Book R, p. 293 identifies Michael's daughter Betsy as the widow and relic of Nathaniel Barnes. A Lewis Thomas died in 1817 and his daughter Betsy Thomas is mentioned in estate records as a legatee. A John Thomas died in 1828, but his estate records mention a single daughter named Francis. In 1810, Betsy Thomas would have been 17 years old. Elijah Thomas and Jesse Thomas are listed in the 1810 census with daughters 16-25 years old. Elijah Thomas owned land on Big Troublesome Creek.
