  The death certificate of William Pressly Saunders names his parents as William Sanders & Bettie Rolings. However, William Pressly Saunders appears to be a stepson of William Saunders rather than a biological child. William Pressly Saundes was born in 1853. In the 1860 census, he is listed as W. P. Rowland in the household of his grandfather, Henry Rowland, of Caswell County. His mother is listed in the household next door. In 1870, he and his mother are enumerated in the household of William Sanders, but his name is listed as Presly Rolin. His marriage bond is the earliest record which records his surname as Saunders. Family oral tradition provides another line of evidence that William Pressly Rollin/Rowland was adopted by William Saunders. My grandmother, Mae Saunders, a granddaughter of William Pressly Saunders, had a best friend named Kate Sartin. Momma Mae (my grandmother) and Kate Sartin were friends from their childhood until Kate died in 1986. They always said that they were told growing up that they were cousins, but they did not know exactly how they were related. Kate Sartin was the granddaughter of Ellis Sartin and Susan H. Roland. Susan H. Roland is listed in the 1860 census of Caswell County, NC in the household of her grandfather, Henry Rowland. Susan H. and William Pressly are both living in the same household. They are brother and sister. Like her brother, her surname is listed in some records as Roland, and as Saunders in others. The death certificates of the children of Ellis Sartin and his wife Susan show Susan's maiden name as both Roland and Saunders. Although no marriage records have been found for William Saunders and Bettie Roland, Betty is evidently his second wife. William Saunders is listed in the 1860 census of Caswell County without a wife and with a number of children.
