  • Notes
    • George Staton's name is listed variously in the records. Probate records of George Dill name Mrs. Richard Staton as an heir. (Greenville Co. Probate Court, Apt. 20, File 29) He is also listed as Richard Staten in the 1850 census of Spartanburg Co., SC. The obituary of Eliza J. Campbell, a daughter, names her parents as George Staton and Axie Dill Staton. (Greenville News, 5 Sep 1933, p. 5) The death certificate of Mrs. Susana Langley names her parents as Axie Dill and Richard Staten.

In the 1850 census of Spartanburg Co., SC Richard Staten, age, 23, islisted consecutively with the families of Reuben Staten, age 25, and James Staten, age 45. In the 1880 census of Greenville Co., SC Axie Staton, widow, is listed next to Reuben Staten and his wife Julia. It is possible that James Staten is the father of Richard and Reuben.

The Confederate Service records for Richard Staton are under the nameof J. R. Staten. He enlisted in the Confederate Army on 5 Nov 1862 in Greenville. He served in the SC 3rd (Palmetto) Battalion, Co. H. from his enlistment through April 1863 under Capt. Holtsclaw. He was transferred to Co. I under Capt. Bowden from May until his death. The muster roll shows he went AWOL on 26 Jun 1863. He died of fever on 3 Jul 1863 at home in Greenville. He apparently went home to die. On 23 Jan 1864 his widow, Axy Staten filed for final settlement.
