Jeremiah2 Stokes (Young1). Jeremiah was born in Frederick, Maryland, on 19 Jun 1736; The following are comments about Jeremiah Stokes made by L. Andrea, Columbia, SC, professional genealogist: 'John Stokes, son of Jeremiah, in a letter to his grandson, a son of his daughter, Maria Louise Stokes who wed Wm. Goldsmith, stated that 'my father Jeremiah Stokes was born in Wales and came to Maryland when he was a boy.' Mr. Thos. Wier Davis of Columbia, SC, found the above data in two letters to his grandmother and dated 1914 from Greenville, SC, and one fromEdna R. Cureton who stated that Mrs. Kate Townes Corbett owned the Jeremiah Stokes Bible. Later a letter from Mrs. Kate T. Cauble/Corbett states that her mother owned the Bible and she was enclosing a partial copy, but said the old Benson Bible that her mother owned had been burned or lost.' From this there is a question of the birthplace of Jeremiah Stokes of Maryland.3,4 He married Elizabeth Hughes on 14 Feb 1765.5 Jeremiah died on 24 Jan 1822 in Greenville District, South Carolina, at age 85.6

The following are comments about Jeremiah Stokes made by L. Andrea, Columbia, SC, professional genealogist, who says, 'Jeremiah Stokes camefrom Maryland to Greenville County, South Carolina, after the Revolutionary War. He settled on the Reedy River & also owned lands just above Jackson Grove Church. His daughter Terry brought with her a rosebush planted in a tub from Maryland. When I was a boy, this rosebush wasstill alive at the old Hardy Jones Gilreath house which is not owned by Miss Ruth Gilreath.'7 He served in the Militia, along with Thomas Stokes and John Fletchall (may be Fletcher), for 23 days service in thecompany of Capt. William Luckett between 1772 and 1774 in Maryland.8 Jeremiah Stokes is listed as a patriot of the American Revolution by furnishing supplies to the revolutionary forces. In the Maryland Archives, Vol XXI, p 141, it is stated, 'At a meeting of the Council of Maryland held Saturday June 20, 1778, it was ordered ---- that the WesternShore ?Treasurer pay to Doct. Phil Thomas ---- Twenty four pounds forthe use of Jeremiah Stokes ----.'9,10 On 12 Jul 1783 in the Old 96 District of South Carolina Jeremiah Stokes, Nehemiah Howard, and Joseph Little made an inventory of the estate of James Bagley (Widow Lucy Bagley).11 In 1786 Greenville County was formed from a former Indian Territory and portions of this county may have been considered Laurens County in 1785 and 865. Many bounty grants for service in the Revolution were for land in Greenville County. While the Minutes of the County Court for Greenville County are not Extant, all other records have survived.12 In 1787, Jeremiah sold land in Maryland according to a note in the descendancy chart provided by Cheri Stokes of Memphis, Tennessee. Since he participated in an inventory of the estate of James Bagley, he evidently was in South Carolina at least 4 years before this.13 He was listed in the 1790 Census showing 3 males of 16 and over, 2 males under 16, 3 females, and 3 slaves in 1790 in Greenville,, South Carolina.
