William Bennett left a will dated July 3, 1827 naming a daughter Anna Arthur, grandson William B. Arthur, and four great-grandchildren, Abner, James, John, and William Arthur. The will was signed by mark indicating that William Bennett could not read or write. Witnesses to the will were Samuel Berger, Alexander Parker, and David Parker. The will was proved Sept. 17, 1827.
William Bennett was involved in an interesting lawsuit filed by a slave girl named Milly Chavis. Milly Chavis was the daughter of a free black woman that lived in Brunswick Co. She was kidnapped at an early age and sold into slavery to William Bennett. William Bennett later deeded the slave to his son in law James Arthur. Milly Chavis sued James Arthur for her freedom and was ultimately freed by the court.
