    • One of our big family mysteries has been the identity of Daniel Crow, father of Lucy Powell Crow. He married Martha Cameline Wilcox 1873. Lucy was born in 1874. Martha remarried to Frank Banner in 1878. Both marriages of Martha Cameline Wilcox are recorded in the family bible of David Powell Wilcox, her father. There is no death recorded for Daniel Crow, so I don't think he died. Mayor Cass (James Kenneth Cass) never knew either of his grandparents, nor did any of his siblings. They don't even know anything about them. Their mother, Lucy Powell Crow, was raised by her grandfather, David Powell Wilcox. The oral tradition is that D.P. Wilcox never approved of his daughter's marriage. Sometime after Lucy was born, he went to their home and brought his granddaughter to live with him. In the 1880 census, Lucy Crow is enumerated in the household of D. P. Wilcox. Her mother, Martha Banner, is living elsewhere in Carter County with her new husband. The question is, "What happened to Daniel Crow?"

      I have found three possible candidates to be the husband of Martha Cameline Wilcox.

      1. Daniel Crow, born c. 1857, listed in the household of William Crow in the 1860 census of Carter Co., TN. However, this family is absent from the 1870 census of Carter County. I have found them in the 1870 census of Richland County, Illinois. This family moved away from Carter County prior to 1870 so this Daniel is not likely to be the one who married Martha Cameline Wilcox.

      2. Daniel Crow, born c. 1849, listed in the household of Thomas Crow in the 1870 census of Carter Co., TN. His death certificate shows that he was married to "Sallie." Carter County marriage records show a marriage record for Daniel Crow and Sarah Blevins in 1871. This Daniel is enumerated in the 1880 census of Carter County with a wife named Sarah and four children, the oldest who is 7 years of age. Therefore, this Daniel is not the one who married Martha Cameline Wilcox.

      3. The third possibility is Daniel Crow who is shown in the household of Isaac Crow in the 1870 census of Carter County, Tennessee. Carter County marriage records show three marriage of persons named "Daniel Crow" in the 1870s: Daniel Crow to Sarah Blevins in 1871, Daniel Crow to Martha C. Wilcox in 1873, and Daniel Crow to Mary Gourley in 1877. During this time frame, census records show only two men named Daniel Crow so it is likely that one of these men was married twice. Since Daniel, son of Thomas, is accounted for, it appears that Daniel, son of Isaac, married first Martha Cameline Wilcox in 1873 and second to Mary Gourley in 1877. The 1910 census gives support to this theory. The marital status column of this census shows "M2" for Dan B. Crow indicating this was a second marriage. Therefore, it is likely that the husband of Martha Cameline Wilcox is the son of Isaac Lincoln Crow.
