    • John was listed in the 1785 land tax list for Pittsylvania County. He was absent from the land tax list in 1786.

John Was listed in the property tax list in 1785 but was absent in 1786. His wife Elizabeth was listed in the 1787 land tax list. Because only single women and widows were included in the list, it appears that John Bennett died sometime after the 1785 land tax list was taken.

In a 1794 deed from John Maddin to Samuel Walker, John Bennett deceased is named as the adjoining landowner. Pittsylvania County, Deed Book 8, p. 489. This deed suggests that his wife Elizabeth was still alive, because she held a life estate in the land and her sons John and Jesse had not yet taken possession of the land.

  • Notes
    • Information about John Bennett is at best sketchy. Neither the identity of his parents, nor the place of his birth is known. No siblings have been identified and no record has been found of his marriage. Existing records enable us to identify his wife Elizabeth Dodson, daughter of Thomas Dodson and Elizabeth Rose.

The first record of John Bennett is in the minutes of the Broad Run Baptist Church in Fauquier Co., Va. John's father-in-law, Thomas Dodson, was minister for the Broad Run Baptist Church.

John Bennett made a will in Pittsylvania County, Virginia on 11 November 1782, which was probated on 18 July 1791. This time difference has led some to speculate that John Bennett died in about 1791. However, examination of property tax records in Pittslvania County show that John Bennett died about 1786. John appears on the tax lists for Pittsylvania County through 1785. He is absent in 1786 and every year thereafter.  Additionally, in 1787 Virginia required each county to compile a tax list which is today known as the 1787 Census of Virginia. This tax list names every male 21 and over and enumerates every male 16-21. The tax list contains a lot on information, but the first three columns name the person charged with the tax, the males 21 and over, and the number of males 16-21. There were two lists for Pittsylvania County, an A list covering the southern half of the county and a B list covering the northern half.  On the A list, there are three entries for the surname Bennett: Elizabeth Bennett, Thomas Bennett and William Bennett. Elizabeth Bennett is charged with the tax of John Bennett and has 1 male 16-21 (son John for whom she paid tax) in her household. Thomas Bennett and William Bennett are both charged with the tax for themselves. Women were not included on the list unless they were the head of household suggesting that John Bennett was deceased. Both Thomas and William, sons of John Bennett and Elizabeth Dodson, have established their own households by 1787.

John Bennett named 9 children in his will: William, Thomas, Jesse, John, Elizabeth Bennett, Ruth Bennett, Sarah Lee, Winifred McDaniel, and Milly Watson. William and Thomas, as the oldest sons, were named executors of his will. William Bennett performed an inventory of the estate of John Bennett which was recorded 19 Mar 1792.

The sons named in the will of John Bennett match the males listed in the 1787 census of Virginia. There were no other Bennetts living in the southern portion of Pittsylvania County. Deed records provide further information linking the children of John Bennett and Elizabeth Dodson.
