William Bennett is likely the one who received a grant of 100 acres in Westmoreland Co. 17 May, 1694 on the Northwest Branch above the Horse Bridge adjoining the land that formerly belonged to Captain Alexander. Northern Neck Grants No. 2, 1694-1700, p. 160.
He lived in Westmoreland near the Machodick dam.
William Bennett died between February 2, 1702/03 when he made his will and April 20, 1703 when the appraisers of his estate were sworn.
The name of his first wife is not known, but she may have been a sister of Henry Cossum. William named his son Cossum. It was common practice at the time to use a wife’s maiden name as a son’s given name. There are also close connections between the Cossum and Bennett families. In the will of William Bennett, Daniel Field was named as trustee of the minor son Cossum. Daniel Field’s sister Margaret was the wife of Henry Cossum. Henry Cossum died about 1687 and his widow married Edward Hart. There is a Northern Neck Land Grant for 880 acres of land to Edward Hart and his wife Margaret, widow of Henry Cossum. Northern Neck Land Grants No. 1, 1690-1692, pg. 18-19. The land escheated to the proprietor because Henry Cossum died without heirs and was granted to Edward Hart.
William Bennett and Dorothy Rush petitioned the court on 27 May 1702 to enforce Dorothy’s right of dower in 100 acres of land owned by her late husband William Rush. William Rush apparently granted the land to his son without the consent of Dorothy. The court ordered that the land be divided and that Dorothy and William Bennett be possessed of one third part. (WC OB 1701-1703, p. 159a).
27 MAY 1702 ORDER BOOK, page 159. Upon petition of William Bennett and Dorothy, his wife, late widow of William Rush praying 100 acres of land given by her husband during the coverture betwixt them to his son, William Rush , without the privity or consent of Dorothy, maybe divided into three equal parts and that they may bee possest of 1/3 thereof as her Dower..
