Notes - "COVINGTON, Melchizedec Covington was born in N.C., and lost both of his parents when he was quite young, consequently he received but little attention from anyone, and grew up without an education. When he was grown, he went to Christian Co., KY., where, in 1799, he married CATHARINE SUDDITH, who was born in Fairfax Co., VA. In 1827 they loaded their effects into a little one-horse wagon, and with their 7 children, came to Callaway Co., Mo. They had $13 in money when they started, and when they arrived at the end of their journey had but 50 cents left. Mr. Covington rented some land and went to work, and then as he became able, he entered land and obtained a home of his own. He raised 13 children, 6 sons and 7 daughters, and died at the age of 86 years".

"James R. Covington
farmer. Among the early families of Callaway county was that of Mr. Covington's father, Melchisedeck Covington, who came to this county in 1829. He was from North Carolina, but his wife, Minerva C., nee Suddeth, was born in Virginia. They were married in the old North State, and soon afterwards removed to Christian county, Kentucky, where they lived for a period of sixteen years. Dissatisfied with the sterility of the lands in Kentucky, and the paucity of nomisma, they came to Callaway county, as stated above. The father was a man of great industry and energy, and a good manager, and in this new fertile county he prospered abundantly. He came here poor and became a well-to-do farmer and substantial citizen of the county. His son relates how that when he arrived in these parts he had nothing in the world to go on with but two old mares, an old wagon and his wife and seven children, with only $14 into the bargain. Many years before he died he paid taxes on over $10,000 worth of property. He died here September 15, 1867, aged eighty years. His wife died many years before. Both died of cancer. They were thought a great deal of by the early settlers of the county, and, in fact, by all who knew them. They had a family of fourteen children: Cynthia A., died in maidenhood, in about 1844; Henry W., now in Montgomery county; Noah, a resident of Montgomery City; Nancy (Mrs. Thomas G. Payton), died in 1879; Mary E., with her brother, Jno. G., at Middleton; Virginia F., widow of Dan White, of Montgomery county; Berry F., of Monroe county; James R., the subject of the sketch; Minerva C. now Mrs. W. H. White of Montgomery county; Sarah F., now mr. Dr. M. S. Warren, of Montgomery City. Three, besides these, died in tender years. James R Covington, after he grew up, engaged in farming for himself, which he followed at different places until 1867, when on then 6th of June 1867, he was married to Mrs. Mary Johnson, the widow of Jas. O. Johnson (deceased), and a daughter of Robert Arnold, and thereupon he settled upon his present farm, having to commence with only eighty acres of land. He now has a good place of a quarter of a section of land. He has one of the best orchards in the vicinity. Mr. and Mrs. C. have two children -- Nannie B. and William H. By her former marriage, Mrs. Covington had two children, Alice A., wife of E. A. Robinson, and John, a young man of exceptional promise. Though only twenty-two years of age, he has bought and paid for, by his own industry, a neat place of eighty acres of land in Audrain county. Mr. and Mrs. C. are both members of the Christian church."
