  The identity of Thomas Combs parents is not currently known. Thomas Combs married Martha Stiers on 16 Sept. 1850 in Rockingham Co. North Carolina Marriage Bonds, # 000119202. The bondsman was John Murphy Jr. and the witness was F. Watkins. In 1850, Thomas Combs (18) and John Murphy (22) are living in the household of William Dunkin (53) and his wife Elizabeth (61) in the Eastern District of North Carolina. 1850 U.S. Census, Rockingham Co., NC, Roll M432_643, p. 16B. In the 1860 Census, Thomas Combs, 30, Martha Combs, 34, Elizabeth Combs, 8, James Combs, 7, and Matilda, 4, are living in the household of William J. Corum, 27. Thomas Combs died in 1863. It seems likely that Tilla and Matilda are the same person and that the age given in the 1870 census for Tilla is incorrect. Thomas and Martha Combs appear in 1860 census. Elizabeth Stier is likely Martha’s mother. Thomas Combs died in a Richmond hospital in 1863. Thomas Combs gave a bond to William McCollister on 4 Oct 1859 in the amount of $7.85. The bond is mentioned in a notice of sale contained in the estate records of William McCollister.
