1371 His headstone state that James Henry Bennett was born in 1871. His death certificate states that he was born in 1869, which is consistent with census records. It is therefore more likely that 1869 is the actual year of his birth. Bennett, James Henry Jr. (I3973)

1372 His household contained 1 male under 5, 1 male 30-40. 1 female under 5, and 1 female 20-30. John Payne, William Payne, Asa Payne and John W. Payne are enumerated on the same page. John Payne is the oldest at 50-60 and may be the father of Keziah Payne. Turner, Lewis (I7520)

1373 His household contained 3 males under 10, 2 males 10-16, 2 males 26-45, 1 female 10-16, 2 females 16-26 and 1 female 26-45. Herron, Joshua (I6301)

1375 His household includes his wife Nannie (30), son Jennings (8), daughter Jessie (7), son Dots (5), daughter Lois (4), and son Carl (2). A hired man named Tom Hairston (40) and cook named Mattie Bennett (24), both black, are also living in the household. Bennett, Thomas (I4505)

1376 His household includes:
2 males <10
1 male 10-15
1 male 26-44 (Ludwell)
1 female <10
1 female 10-15
1 female 16-25
1 female 16-44 (Nancy)
Worsham, Ludwell (I696)

1377 His middle name could be either Walter or Washington. He is identified as Walter Combs in the 1850 census. On the other hand, the death certificate of his wife gives the middle name Washington. It is unclear at this point whether the informant named in the death certificate had personal knowledge, so I tend to favor the former rather than the latter. Combs, Albert W. (I8805)

1378 His mother is identified as Mattie Cozart in his death certificate. Family F464

1379 His name is spelled Marian in the census. Nance, Marion (I3836)

1380 His name is spelled Vaitshee in the census. Nance, Vachel (I3837)

1381 His pension application states that he was born in Nottoway County. However, Nottoway County was not formed until twenty years after his birth. He was more likely born in the part of Amelia County that later became Nottoway County. Evans, Elisha (I2401)

1382 His tombstone gives his date of death as 22 Mar 1947. Moore, Woody Henry (I2320)

1384 his wife Settle, Elizabeth (I8585)

1385 His wife Martha Combs, 34, and children Elizabeth Combs, 8, James Combs, 7, and Matilda, 4, are also living in the household. Elizabeth Stiers is also living in the same household, which supports the conclusion that Martha is the daughter of Elizabeth Stiers. Elizabeth Stiers maiden name was Elizabeth Cunningham. Combs, Thomas (I898)

1386 His will was probated in Chester County, SC in September, 1795. McClurkin, James (I7721)

1387 His will was probated in march Term of Pittsylvania County Court. Anderson, Charles (I8968)

1388 History of Gibson County, Indiana, with illustrations descriptive of its scenery and biographical sketches of some of its prominent men and pioneers," by Jas. T. Tartt & Co., Edwardsville, IL, 1884, p.192

The first church erected in Washington Township was built on the northeast corner of military donation seventy-seven, belonging to Hezekia Bennett. The building was a log cabin without any floor, and the sleepers made to serve as seats for the congregation. The name of the minister who presided at this temple was Rev. Hanks. The faith of the people who worshiped here was of the Baptist persuasion.
A little incident connected with this congregation will perhaps not be out of place here. Hezekiah and Armstead Bennett, members of the church, had been indulging overmuch in "high lonesome's" and were brought to task for their overindulgence. Armstead was penitent and promised to reform, and was forgiven and retained in the fold, but Hezekia, being "muleish," stiffened his neck and would neither apologize nor make any promises, which created considerable excitement and confusion, and noise sufficient to awaken Sister Mollie Cheek, the sleeping member, as she was called, when she, learning the situation, exclaimed, "Turn him out! Turn him out! He always will keep getting drunk." This turned the tide against Hezekiah and he was dropped from "the ark of safety."
Bennett, Hezekiah (I653)

1389 Holland Bennett is the head of the household immediately before his, and Mourning Bennett heads the household immediately after, suggesting a relationship of some type. His son William Washington Bennett heads the household before Holland Bennett. Bennett, William Moore (I695)

Text: THE MCCLURKEN FAMILY
For much of the information contained in this section, your compiler
is indebted to Miss Lois Myers of Kittredge, Colorado, herself
a McClurken descendant, and to Mrs. Price R. Reid of Wichita,
Kansas, who joined the Daughters of the Colonists on her descent
from James McClurken as an Original Landowner. Miss Myers
spent some time in the native town of the McClurkins (as they spell
it in Ireland), Ballymena, County Antrim, Ireland, and also traveling
over much of the United States gathering information for a
book which she is writing.
James McClurken settled in Laurens Co. in 1773, but moved to
Chester Co. about 1788. James McClurken brought ten children to
America in the ship "Lord Donluce" in 1772, sailing from Larne,
Co. Antrim to Charleston, S. C. James McClurken died in Chester
Co. between date of his will, Dec. 9, 1794 and the date it was probated,
Sept. 21, 1795. He was born between 1700 and 1720 in Ireland.
The will is recorded in Will Book A on pages 216-217, Chester
Co. A summary of the will follows: He bequeaths to his well-beloved
son, Thomas McClurken, daughter Eleanor, son Samuel,
daughter Jean (Jane), daughter Catherine, daughter Jennet, deed
son James' children, deed daughter Lilly's (Lillias) children, to
grandsons, Andrew and James McClurken, sons of my son John.
Bequeaths to all grandsons named for him, viz. To James McClurken,
son Samuel's son; to James Boyd, daughter Catherine's son;
to James Weir, daughter Jean's son; to James McClurken, Jennet's
son; to Mary Younger, my daughter Eleanor's daughter. Executors,
John Maybin (Maben) and my beloved son-in-law, David Weir.
Witnesses: Stafford Curry, James Brown, James Strong.
James McClurken's children with their approximate births are
as follows:
1. Mary McClurken, b. 1744, m. George Moore. Must have died
without issue before her father's will was made.
2. Thomas McClurken, b. 1746, m. Smith, dau. of David
Smith in Chester Co., S. C.
3. James McClurken, b. 1748, m. Catherine Will in
Laurens Co., S. C. Proved Jan. 22, 1831.
4. Lillias McClurken, b. 1750. Probably married John Baird. Died
before her father s will was made.
5. Eleanor McClurken, b. 1753, m. (1) William Young (2) John
Mabin. Died in Ohio.
6. Samuel McClurken, b. 1756, m. Nancy Died 1795
in Laurens Co., S. C. Son Samuel went to Henderson Co.
Tenn.
7. Jane (Jean) McClurken, b. 1758, m. David Weir.
8. Catherine McClurken, b. 1760, m. William Boyd in 1778 in
Laurens Co. before her father moved to Chester. A minor on
arrival in Charleston.
9. John McClurken, b. 1763, m. Margaret Walker. He was a
minor on arrival in Charleston.
10. Jennet McClurken, b. 1765, m. Matthew Henry McClurken,
a cousin. Son James went to Preble Co., Ohio, then to Randolph,
Ill.
According to Miss Lois Myers, the descendants of Andrew
McClurken, the son of John McClurken, are the only ones of the
name in S. C. today. His brother, James went to Tipton Co., Tenn.
Royal Grants to this family of McClurken.
( In the early records the name is written in different ways,
McLurkam, McClurkham, McClurkan, McCluckan, McClurkin,
and McClurken).
From Jane Revills Original Lists of Protestant Immigrants to S. C.
1763-1773. Also from Royal Grants, State Department, Columbia,
S. C.
At a Council Meeting in Charleston on Jan. 6, 1773 James
McClurken was given a King's or Royal Grant of 350 A. that is,
100 A. for himself, 50 A. for his wife, name unknown and 50 A.
apiece for 4 minor children, the older children getting grants of
their own. The minor children were Catherine, John, and Jennet.
Another minor child of whom we have no record could have died
soon after arrival. This grant was for 350 A. in Craven Co., southwest
of Durbin s Creek on Bowen's Branch, Aug. 19, 1774.
James McLurkam, the son, unmarried 100 A. Craven Co. south
of Enoree River, bordering on Mordecai Moore's land. May 5, 1773.
Probably came over ahead of his father. Survey Feb. 27, 1773.
Recorded Aug. 20, 1773.
Samuel McClurkam, 100 A. Ninety-Six Dist. on Raburn Creek,
bordering Robert Box, Edward Box, James Williams and Thos.
McClurkam. Survey Sept. 30, 1774. Granted May 4, 1775.
Thomas McClurkam In Book E, p. 16, Chester Co., S. C. Thomas
McClurkam deeds to David Weir of Chester part of the 100 A.
granted to him June 16, 1768 by Wm. Bull, Governor and Commander-
in-chief of State of S. C.
Jane McClurkam 100 A. Craven Co., Raeburn Creek, Mar. 17,
1775.
Mary McClurkam 100 A. Craven Co. Bounded by William Williamson,
Thomas Weir. Mar. 17, 1775.
Lillias McClurkam 100 A. Craven Co. '96 Dist. on branch of
Enoree River called River Dam Branch. (This may be Beaver
dam). Mar. 17, 1775.
Eleanor McClurkam 100 A. Craven Co. North West side of Durbin's
Creek, Bowen's Branch, bordering James McClurkan, Patrick
Cunningham. Mar. 17, 1775.
Ballymena, Co. Antrim, Ireland, from which the McClurkens
came to America is 15 miles northwest of Larne from which port
they sailed to Charleston. Miss Myers says that in her research
there in 1950 she found no McClurken farther than seven miles
from Ballymena. She found five male McClurkins (They spell the
name with an i in Ballymena) in County Antrim in the 1666 Heath
money Tax Rolls and nothing more to 1766 when she found a James
McClurkin and John McClurkin on a voter s list. (Protestant Church
list at Ballymena). She believes this James is the James who settled
in Laurens Co. in 1773. The Irish records, most of them were destroyed
by Cromwell. Those that remained in North Ireland were
destroyed to a very large extent in the war between North and
South Ireland in 1922-23, therefore it is difficult to prove anything.

Smith Puckett (J20) and his first wife, Catherine Boyd.)

Jeremiah2 Stokes (Young1). Jeremiah was born in Frederick, Maryland, on 19 Jun 1736; The following are comments about Jeremiah Stokes made by L. Andrea, Columbia, SC, professional genealogist: 'John Stokes, son of Jeremiah, in a letter to his grandson, a son of his daughter, Maria Louise Stokes who wed Wm. Goldsmith, stated that 'my father Jeremiah Stokes was born in Wales and came to Maryland when he was a boy.' Mr. Thos. Wier Davis of Columbia, SC, found the above data in two letters to his grandmother and dated 1914 from Greenville, SC, and one fromEdna R. Cureton who stated that Mrs. Kate Townes Corbett owned the Jeremiah Stokes Bible. Later a letter from Mrs. Kate T. Cauble/Corbett states that her mother owned the Bible and she was enclosing a partial copy, but said the old Benson Bible that her mother owned had been burned or lost.' From this there is a question of the birthplace of Jeremiah Stokes of Maryland.3,4 He married Elizabeth Hughes on 14 Feb 1765.5 Jeremiah died on 24 Jan 1822 in Greenville District, South Carolina, at age 85.6

The following are comments about Jeremiah Stokes made by L. Andrea, Columbia, SC, professional genealogist, who says, 'Jeremiah Stokes camefrom Maryland to Greenville County, South Carolina, after the Revolutionary War. He settled on the Reedy River & also owned lands just above Jackson Grove Church. His daughter Terry brought with her a rosebush planted in a tub from Maryland. When I was a boy, this rosebush wasstill alive at the old Hardy Jones Gilreath house which is not owned by Miss Ruth Gilreath.'7 He served in the Militia, along with Thomas Stokes and John Fletchall (may be Fletcher), for 23 days service in thecompany of Capt. William Luckett between 1772 and 1774 in Maryland.8 Jeremiah Stokes is listed as a patriot of the American Revolution by furnishing supplies to the revolutionary forces. In the Maryland Archives, Vol XXI, p 141, it is stated, 'At a meeting of the Council of Maryland held Saturday June 20, 1778, it was ordered ---- that the WesternShore ?Treasurer pay to Doct. Phil Thomas ---- Twenty four pounds forthe use of Jeremiah Stokes ----.'9,10 On 12 Jul 1783 in the Old 96 District of South Carolina Jeremiah Stokes, Nehemiah Howard, and Joseph Little made an inventory of the estate of James Bagley (Widow Lucy Bagley).11 In 1786 Greenville County was formed from a former Indian Territory and portions of this county may have been considered Laurens County in 1785 and 865. Many bounty grants for service in the Revolution were for land in Greenville County. While the Minutes of the County Court for Greenville County are not Extant, all other records have survived.12 In 1787, Jeremiah sold land in Maryland according to a note in the descendancy chart provided by Cheri Stokes of Memphis, Tennessee. Since he participated in an inventory of the estate of James Bagley, he evidently was in South Carolina at least 4 years before this.13 He was listed in the 1790 Census showing 3 males of 16 and over, 2 males under 16, 3 females, and 3 slaves in 1790 in Greenville,, South Carolina.

1394 Hubbard Farrell was one of Governor Berkeley's officers during Bacon's Rebellion. He died in August 1676 of wounds received during a fight of Col. Nathaniel Bacon's home on King's Creek. The married Dorothy Drew of Charles City County. Her tombstone, now at St. Paul's Church in Norfolk, Virginia states that Dorothy died 18 January 1673. Ferrell, Hubbard (I3188)

1397 Hugh Reynolds was a member of the Muddy Run Society, a Congregation of Covenenters in Lancaster, Pensylvania. Rev. John Cuthbertson was the first Covenenter missionary in America. He kept a diary of his activiteis from 1751 until 1790. The entry in Rev. John Cuthbertson's diary on 30 December 1756 reads:" Rode 6 miles to and from W. Niele's: married Hew Reynolds and Mary K." www.bennett-twins.com/documents/Diaries/Cuthbertson/index.php?imageNumber=38 Family F451

John Cuthbertson's diary on 15 August 1759 reads: "rode 16 miles to Muddy Run-held session, etc. Preached psalm 119:123 and preached Corinthians 11:31; and baptized Jean, daughter to John Reid and Joseph, son to Hew Reynolds; and then came home - family - unwell" www.bennett-twins.com/documents/Diaries/Cuthbertson/index.php?imageNumber=51

1399 I am not sure that the year is correct on the death certificate. Francis is not listed in the 1850 census. Combs, Francis (I8809)

1400 I am reasonably certain that the father of Robert Crow is also named Robert Crow. From his Rev. War pension application I know that his birthdate is 1 Jan 1751. On one web site I found the following, "On the 1772 Fincastle tax records found in Botetourt, VA, Robert, who just turned age 21, is declared by his father, Robert Crow, to be his son." (Source: http://www.joepearce.com/gen/ghtout/np11.html) We also know that Robert Crow enlisted for service in the Rev. War in Fincastle County.

I also think that Robert had brothers named Edward and Thomas. Here is another record posted on a different website: "ROBERT CROW and JOHN CROW paid tithes in Augusta [Botetourt] County. In 1771 the delinquent tithes record reveals that "ROBERT CROW and sons, THOMAS, JOHN and EDWARD, delinquent." Later we find in 1771 ROBERT CROW, gone to Holston; THOMAS CROW, gone to Holston; JOHN CROW, gone to Holston; EDWARD CROW, gone to Holston." (Source: http://www.tngenweb.org/tncolor/crow.htm)

FincastleCounty was formed in 1772 from Botetourt County. Here we have a Robert Crow with sons named Edward and Thomas. Edward and Thomas are each a little older than our Rev. War soldier. I'm not exactly certain if John is another son of Robert or is his brother.

Now consider the following property records.

Fincastle County Surveys
12 Jan 1774 Thomas Crow survey for 226 acres on Middle Fork of Holston River
21 Jan 1774 Robert Crow survey for 241 acres on Hunger's Mother br. Of Holston River
21 Jan 1774 Edward Crow survey for 299 acres on Middle Fork of Holston River
25 Feb 1775 John Crow survey for 210 acres on Hunger's Mother br. Of Holston River
(Source: Lewis Preston Summers, History of Southwest Virginia, 1746-1786, Washington County, 1777-1870; J.L Hill Printing Company, Richmond, 1903.)

These are clearly the same people noted in the tax record above. BTW, the property of Robert Crow adjoins that of Edward Crow.

Now some Virginia land grants from the Library of Virginia website.

29 Aug 1785, Robert Crow, Montgomery Co., 241 acres on Hunger Mother a branch of the middle fork of Holstein
30 August 1785, Edward Crow, Montgomery Co., 299 acres in a branch of the middle fork of Holstein River adjoining the land of Robert Crow
1 September 1785, Thomas Crow, Montgomery Co., 226 acres on the middle fork of Holstein River and near the head thereof

These are the exact same tracts of land recorded in the Fincastle County surveys.

Now, looking at the 1793 land tax list of Wythe Co. we find Edward Crow with 299 acres, Thomas Crow with 226 acres, and Robert Crow with 250 acres. Once again, these are the same three people. (Source: http://www.newrivernotes.com/va/wythe93l.htm)

There is an affidavit in Robert Crow's Rev. War pension application which states that Robert Crow enlisted in Fincastle Co. in what is now Wythe Co.

So, I think I have found Robert's family. The question is, "is the Robert Crow in the property records above our soldier or is it his father?" I'm inclined to believe it is the father.

Our soldier apparently moved into Washington County, Virginia. The will of Mary Chambers (1796) states that Robert Campbell was of Washington County. His oldest daughter was married in Washington County. Here are some surveyor's records from Washington County.

It appears that this creek, Hunger's Mother, crosses the Wythe/Washington County line. This area is in Smyth County today. You can find Hungry Mother State Park on a map. This seems to be the area where Robert lived.
