Benjamin Wright was bondsman on the marriage bond for David Bradford and Elisabeth Man dated 6 Nov. 1777 in Granville Co. NC. Brent H. Holcomb, Marriages of Granville County, North Carolina, 1753-1868, Genealogical Publishing Co., Balt. Md. 2003, p. 33

The 1783 will of Wingfield Wright names his son Benjamin, whom he gives a negro named Dick. Wingfield also granted Benjamin use of a female slave named Silvah during his natural life, after which the slave was to be equally divded between his two oldest sons Winfiled Wright and Johnman Wright.

Benjamin Wright moved to Franklin Co., NC by 1786, which is evidenced by a 1786 deed in Granville Co. from the heirs of Susannah Wright to John Pope Jr. Benjamin’s sister Susannah Wright died by Nov. 1784 when an account of sales and inventory of her estate were returned to court. Record of Susannah Wright Estate, Granville County Estate Records, 1746-1919, C.R.044.508.197 (Woody - Wynn). She was left a tract of land in Granville Co. in her father’s will. In a deed dated 22 Feb. 1786, Hannah Wright, admrx. of Susannah Wright, William Wright of Nash Co., John Wright of Halifax Co, and Benjamin Wright of Frankln Co, NC, all heirs of Susanna Wright, decd., sold to John Pope (Sr.) the land left to Susannah by their father. The land was part of a larger tract formerly owned Winfield Wright, decd. Granville Co. Deed Book O, p. 454.

Note that Thomas Wright, brother of Benjamin and Susannah, is not mentioned in the 1786 deed from the heirs of Susannah Wright to John Pope (Sr.). His absence suggests that he was deceased, however, his share should nevertheless have passed to his children. Perhaps they were not of age in 1786 and could not sign the deed. In any event, the interest of Thomas or his surviving children was not conveyed. Therefore, it appears that John Pope (Sr.). did not acquire full title to the property. On 8 Aug. 1786, John Pope, Sr. deeded the land acquired from the heirs of Susannah Wright to John Pope, Jr. Granville Co. Deeds O, p. 511. Subsequntly, on 29 Nov. 1787, Augustine Wright, as heir of Thomas Wright, conveyed his interest in the same land to John Pope, Jr. Granville Co. Deed Book N, p. 21. The deed from Augustine Wright to john Pope Jr. was apparently made to unify title to the land formerly owned by Winfield Wright and Sussanah Wright.

It is believed that Benjamin Wright remained in Franklin co. until about 1794 when he moved to Johnsotn Co., NC. I have made a cursory review of Franklin Co., NC records and there are many records mentioning Benjamin Wright, who appears to be a prominent citizen.

A Benjamin Wright married in Wake Co. to Olive Perry 17 Aug. 1787. It is not known whether this is the same Benjmain Wright who lived in Franklin and Johnston counties. If so, it is probably a second marriage.

On 30 Aug. 1794 Benjamin Wright purchased from Samuel Balding for 50 pds., 70 acres on north side of Black Mingo near Beard’s Branch. The land was granted to Samuel Balding 12 Nov. 1793. Winfield Wright (his son), Jo. Hodges, and Matthew Moore witnessed the deed, which was proved in Nov. Ct. 1795. Johnston Co. Deed Book V, p. 106.

On 16 Oct. 1764, Benjamin Cannon entered 165 acres of land in Johston Co. lying on the north side of Black Mingo joing his own line, Clemment Bryan’s line on Beard’s Branch, William Rialses line and Petter Harrises line. Weynette Parks Huan, Johnston County Land Entires 1778 thru 1805, Durham, NC, 1980, p. 81.

On 30 Oct. 1794 Benjamin Wright purchased from John Lee of Hawkins Co., NC, two tracts of land from John Sasser for 200 pds. The first tract contained 300 acres on the east side of Black mango joining the lines of Sasser and Cumberland (?). The first tract comprises comprised two parts - the first part was granted to John Sasser by patent and the second part was granted to Drewry Hix by patent dated 1769. The conveyance also incude a second tract containing 122 acres of land on the lower side of Beard’s Branch near Wood’s line, which was granted by patent to James Harrision in 1779. The deed was signed by James Lee as attorney for john Lee. Hopkins Lee and Matthew Moor witnessed the deed. Johnston Co. Deed Book V, p. 131.

Benjamin Wright is recorded in the 1800 census in Johnson Co., NC. His household includes 2 males 10-15, 3 males 16-25, 1 male over 45, 1 female under 10, 1 female 16-25, and 1 female over 45, and 5 slaves. 1800 Federal Census, Johnson Co., NC, Roll 31, p. 771. There is sufficeint eveidence to conclude that he is the son of Wingfield Wright. Thus, Benjamin Wright was born sometime prior to 1755.

Benjamin Wright is not listed in the 1800 tax list for Johnston Co., although he is listed in 1799. A deed from William Proctor to James Woodall refers to the land being conveyed as adjacent widow Wright’s line, John Mann Wright, and Winfield Wright. Johnsotn Co. Deed Book E-2, p. 256-246. Therefore, it can be concluded that Benjamin Wright died in Johnsotn Co., probably near tthe end of the year 1800.

Notes on the Smith Family Written April 4, 1903 by William Smith II.

My birth:  William Smith II, I was born of Ralph and Ardinia Smith in the year 1867 on August 11th.  A noteworthy incident is the anniversary of the formation of my native county, Pittsylvania, one hundred years ago.

My father, a farmer, Ralph Smith, was born September 1, 1813. His parents were George K. Smith and Susan Smith (nee Adkins) The fatherof George K.was George Smith (an error according to family tradition)(By BlanfordTowlerAnderson)

The following are my aunts and uncles on my father's sideviz. Jabez, Booker died in his 28th year and worth about $12,000. He was a tobacconist.  Polly Smith married Mark Anderson; LetitiaSmith married
Ambrose Rucker; Nancy Smith married Watt Otey Anderson.  The latter were parents of Capt. Edward Anderson of the U.S.A. and how at West Point.  (Later he was Brig. Gen. Edward Anderson & died Nov.
2, 1937.  He retired several years ago and lived in Jacksonville,Florida.  He married 1st Henrietta Sands of Washington and New York– divorced her and later married Amelie Duncan, a daughter of Fannie SmithDuncan – the latter a daughter of William Smith, son of George K. Smith- By: B.T. A.)

William Smith Sr. married Rebecca Hodnett (She was an aunt of Asa Hodnett, sheriff of Pittsylvania County, Virginia).

Elizabeth Smith married Naaman Mahan; Rhodia Smith married George Reynolds.

My grandfather George K. Smith died in 1845 having made his will in1842.  In 1842-1843 he owned including the lands inherited from his son Booker who died single, about 1700 acres on Tomahawk Creek.  His estate valued at about $17,000.

My father during his single manhood taught a private school for a few months.  He was not considered a scholar and was what we might say was not highly educated.  This statement applies equally as well to my dear mother whose eyes are now dim with years and whose limbs andbody are weary from her unsurpassed energy exerted in life.

Father was tall, about six feet and manly, yet he was not fond of strife nor contentious, somewhat reserved and sought not public honors, hence unknown politically.  He was of an age, that exempted him from servicein the Civil War.  (War between the States) of 61-65 but nevertheless furnished two sons, Booker and George, who made valiant soldiers for States Rights.  The former never returning after cessation of hostilities to his father's fireside, having died in prison at Newport News, Virginia. He hath no love for the President of the Confederacy, but was an ardent admirer of Jackson and Lee.  While believing in States Rights he thought the South erred in seceding.

He was a good and upright business man such that he made ample and comfortable provisions for a large family and in 1894-1895 when he made advancements to his ten living children his estate was valued at $12,000 but in reality was worth $16,000 to $18,000.

He died at the advanced age of 88 years, four months and seven days, leaving a large family, widow and a concourse of friends to mourn his loss.

His mother, Ardinna Smith (nee Wright) was a descendant of Thomas Wright who she says, to her best information came from Bedford County, Virginia.

Thomas Wright married Sallie (alias Sarah) Pullen and of said marriage the following children were born:  Peggy married a Mahan; John P.Wright;  Christopher Wright; Polly married a Rorer; Joseph Wrightand William Wright.

Christopher Wright my grandfather married Betsy DeBoe of which marriage the following children were born:  Thomas Wright; Jno. Wright; Ardinia, my mother; Sarah; Polly; Elizabeth; Joseph; Christopher; William Abram; Abitha generally called Bee and Lucy.

6 Clement Lanier 1737 - 1812
+Hannah ???? - Bef 1812

Clement was born in Brunswick County, Virginia as shown in a
record in the Library, Richmond, Virginia. "A Roll of Captain Bronaugh's
Company, July 13, 1856, shows "Clemt Lenore", drafted 1755 in Brunswick, VA
at age 18, size 5-5 1/2, Trade, Planter, Country, Virginia. Description,
thin faced, of light hair."

He died in November or December of 1812 in Rowan County, North Carolina
where he and his family had moved in 1783. He married in Virginia, Hannah
??, who died before 1812. Clement's will of January1, 1813, proved in
November 1820 in Rowan County, NC named sons John, Clement,Jr., Lewis,
William, Joshua, Seth, Daughter Rebecca Hardester, and son Elijah.

From this we see Clement Jr who probably the groom in the marriage bond was
prob born ca 1780 and alive in 1820. I would think the David Miller named on
the Rowan Co bond to be about the same age.

There was the Hon, David Miller b 5 Feb 1775 at Boones Fork in Rowan Co. son
of William Miller and Mary "Polly" Eldridge. It appears David may have been
the Justice of the Peace in Rowan.

Col. William Kennon (1688-1751) married Ann Eppes 19 June 1711 in Henrico County. She was the daughter of Francis Eppes and Ann Isham.

The Bristol Parish Register recorded the birth of five children: Richard Kennon (15 April 1712), William Kennon (9 Feb. 1713/1714), Francis Kennon (3 Sept. 1715), Henry Isham Kennon (22 April 1718), John Kennon (20 Dec. 1721)

In 1717, William Kennon patented land in Henrico for the importation of John Brown, David Camell, John Whorly, Mary Brown, Cha. Gibson, Fran. Merryman, David Maybank, John Wooldredg, James Pentha, and Matthew Ford.

Col. William Kennon paid taxes in Henrico County on 21 levies and 4,255? acres in 1736 and on 10 tithables in 1747.  He also had a quarter in Amelia County from 1737.

Col. Kennon “departed this life in 1751,” so said the will of James Cromer who wanted to be buried nearby.  Chesterfield Co. Will Book 1, pg. 295. Richard Kennon presented his will 7 October 1752 but refused to serve as executor.

In 1745 Richard Kennon of Charles City County and William Kennon Jr. of Henrico County sold several tracts on covering more than 9,800 acres on Cub Creek in present-day Charlotte County.  Ann and Elizabeth Kennon relinquished their dower right in the land. Brunswick Co. Deed Book 4, pg. 1, 4, 24, 27, 31, 41, 44, 48, 51, 55, 58, 62, 66, 70.

William was a vestryman of Bristol Parish from as early as 1720 to 1735 when his name disappears from the vestry book pages,  vestryman of Dale Parish, justice of Henrico County in 1710,  and a colonel in the militia.

Columbus Lee Harrison was the son of Jospeh Harrison and Eliza Riley. He married Polly Lanier, daughter of Clement Lanier and Nicey Ann Nance. They lived in Emmons, Davidson Co., North Carolina.

Columbus L. Harrison appears in the 1910 census for Davidson Co., NC. Roll: T624_1106, p. 7A, E.D. 24. He is 48 years old and married to Polly, who is 44. Five children are listed: A. Kerney (18), James Vester (17), Bessie (15), Shelley (9), and Glenn (7). Both Columbus and his wife Polly indicate that they were born in North Carolina.

Columbus Harrison was born 3 Nov. 1861 in Denton, Davidson Co., NC and died suddenly on 11 June 1923, in Davidson Co., NC. He is buried at Toms Creek Baptist Church. He married Polly Lanier 22 July 1886 in Davidson Co., NC.

Cossum Bennett was born Jan 29, 1687. Cossum was a minor when his father, William, died. Daniel Field was appointed trustee by Cossum's father "for the good of my son to advise and instruct him in the management of his estate." Approximately one year following the death of his father, Cossum petitioned the court to release Daniel Field as his trustee.

D & W 3, pg. 210. COSSOM BENNETT son and executor of WILLIAM BENNETT humbly sheweth that your petitioner was of the full age of seventeen 29 January last and having received my father's estate of DANIEL FIELD, administrator, during my minority, instant, prays that DANL. FIELD may be discharged from the same.
23 Feb. 1703/04. Acknowledged.

Shortly afterward, the following deed appears.

D & W 3, pg. 273. 27 Sept. 1704. MARGRETT HART of Stafford County to COSSUM BENNETT and JOHN HUDSON. For a consideration already received. My interest of the within land according to the last will and testament of WILLIAM BENNETT.
Signed: Margaret Hart
Wit: NATHL. POPE, GEORGE ESKERIDGE
27 Sept. 1704. Acknowledged by MRS MAGARET HART.

Note that the will of William Bennett gave Cossum's sister Margaret, William's plantation in Stafford Forest. One might therefore assume that the Margaret Hart referred to in the above deed is Cossum's sister. That may not be correct.

Daniel Field, trustee for Cossum Bennett also had a sister named Margaret, who married Edward Hart. Therefore, it is possible that the Margeret Hart is Daniel's sister, not William's daughter. Many sources identify Henry Cossum as Margaret Field's first husband. I have not confirmed this information, but it does explain the source of the name Cossum. A man named Henry Cossume did in fact live in Westmoreland near the Machotick River, the same area where the Bennettts lived as evidenced by the following deed.

I have not researched deed records for Henry Cossume, so further investigation in that direction might prove fruitful.

Magaret Field married Edward Hart, presumably after the death of Henry Cossum. Edward Hart was Justice of the Peace for Stafford County, Virginia, in 1702. On September 4, 1703, an inventory of the estate of Edward Hart was filed by his widow, Margaret Hart. After the death of Edward Hart, Margaret married Charles Ashton, who is the grantor in the deed mentioned above. Note also the name of the grantee, Joshua Hudson.

Margaret's marriage to Charles Ashton, and her prior marriage to Edward Hart are evidenced by the following Stafford County deed.

7 Jul 1706. MARGARET HART of St. Paul's Parish in Stafford Co., to CHARLES ASHTON of Washington Parish, Westmoreland Co., for £50 sells 500 acres, the said ASHTON intending by the sufferance of God Almighty the said MARGARET HART to espouse, marry and to take to wife. July 10 1706, this deed recorded between MARGARET HART and CHARLES ASHTON, GENT.

Proof that she is the sister of Daniel Field is contained in the following deed in Westmoreland County.

Book 4, page 165. Jan 22, 1708. MARGARET ASHTON, widow of CHARLES ASHTON, Dec'd., to his sons BURDETT and CHARLES ASHTON. Her 'loving brother DANIEL FIELD ' to be her attorney.

The deed from Margaret Hart to Cossom Bennett and John Hudson was dated Sept. 1704. John Hudson is the brother of Joshua Hudson mentioned above. Since Edward Hart died in 1703, Margaret (Field) Hart was a widow at the time and had not yet married Charles Ashton. Therefore she could deed property in her own name. Also, it seems significant that Magaret Hart does not refer to William Bennett as her father in the deed. Since her brother Daniel Field was trustee for Cossum during his minority, it may very well be that Margaret obtained property from her brother that had been willed to Cossom and was simply conveying the property back to Cossum upon his reaching majority.

In 1708 Cossum Bennett, Catherine's then husband, relinquished his interest in the estate of Charles Ellis to the widow, Joyce Ellis. This record confirms the identify of Catherine Ellis as the daughter of Charles Ellis. Stafford Co. Book Z, p. 419.

Dabeny is likely the son of Benjamin Cannon and Mary East. He apparently died unmarried at a young age. In 1802, Dabney made deeds of gifts of his land and property to his nephew Benjamin Bartlett Cannon, who was only about 1 year old at the time. The deed seems to have been made in anticipation of death.

The maiden name of Dabney’s grandmother Mary, the wife of Joseph East, is not currently known. However, it is interesting that Joseph East named his good friend James Dabney as executor in his will. It is certianly plausible that James Dabney is a borther-in-law of Joseph East and that his wife’s maiden name was Mary Dabney.

Daniel Bennett and Mary his wife of Fauquier Co., VA. in 1775 deeded away land that had been left Mary by her father, John Holtzclaw, in Culpepper Co.. The Bennetts seem to have moved to Shelby Co., KY., where Daniel Bennett is shown in 1795 with 1 tithable in the tax lists.

Daniel Bennett married Mary Holsclaw, apparently in of Fauquier Co., VA. They were members of the Carter's Run Baptist Church. In 1775 Daniel and Mary deeded away land in Culpepper Co., Virginia that had been left Mary by her father, John Holtzclaw. They are referred to in the deed as being of Fauquier Co. Daniel witnessed a deed on 4 August 1779 in Culpepper Co., suggesting that he lived in Culpepper at that time. Daniel and Mary appear to have moved to Shelby Co., KY., where Daniel Bennett is shown on tax lists in 1795 with 1 tithable.

Peter Hitt kept an ordinary or general store in Fauquier County, and his account book is still extant. The original is in the Warrenton Library, but a photostatic copy is in the library of the Virginia Baptist Historical Society at the University of Richmond. It indicates that he was a prominent member of Carter's Run Baptist Church. Most of the records, in which he apparently mingled contributions to the church with his own accounts at the store, appear to be from the 1770's and 1780's, though a few are earlier. Joseph Hitt and Henry Hitt are mentioned in the accounts (apparently his brothers); also "A. Holtzclaw" (apparently his son-in-law, Archibald Holtzclaw, b. 1764) and Daniel Bennett (Archibald's uncle-in-law, who married Mary Holtzclaw). A Joseph Barnett is mentioned in the will of Peter Hitt.
