| 714 | Spicer, Adm'r of Stone v. Pope et al. Va.Gen. 1736. John Stone, by his will, April 27, 1695, ‘devised his plantation and the profits of his slaves and personal estate, to his wife during life, and declares his will to be, that his son Richard Metualf and Ann his wife live upon the said plantation after her death, during their lives, and also keep and employ the negroes upon the said plantation, making use, as they shall see cause, of all the profits of the said lands, and clear produce of his said negroes, stock and plantation, except the increase of the said negroes, hereafter given away.’Then he ‘devises to Mary and Elizabeth, two daughters of Richard and Ann Metualf, a negro a piece, by name, and to John, their son, a negro child, the next that should be born.’Then follows this clause: ‘I give unto my daughter Ann's children, that she shall bear hereafter, a negro child a piece, as it shall please God the negro women shall bear them. Further, it is my will that if any of the said children prove disobedient to them, that the said Richard Metualf and Ann his wife, do keep them until they shall submit themselves unto their parents.’Then he ‘gives all his personal estate, to be divided among Richard and Ann Metualf's children, after their deaths, and makes Richard Metualf, Henry Fleet, and Edwin Conway, executors. ’The testator's wife died before him, and Metualf, upon his death, got all the slaves and personal estate into his possession, without proving the will, which was not produced till after his death, in 1699, and was then proved in Richmond Court by the witnesses only. Ann Metualf, after her husband's death, got possession, and marrying one Barrow, he was thereby in possession. Ann survived Barrow, and died 1728. She had four children by Metualf, Mary, Elizabeth, John, aforesaid, and Sarah, born after the will was made, to whom, after their mother's death, Stone's estate belonged by the will. Information from "Historical Atlas of Westmoreland County, Virginia" by David Eaton, 1942: "Colonel John Stone, of near Leedstown, married Mrs. Sarah Walker, widow of Colonel John Walker, prior to 1672. Sarah married first, Colonel Henry Fleet. Colonel John Stone was High Sheriff and a Justice of Richmond County before 1694. He was born about 1630 and settled near Leedstown, now in Westmoreland County, and had a son, Francis, who married Mrs. Mary Kay, widow of James Kay, of Richmond County, and daughter of Thomas Pannell, ancestor of General J.E.B. Stuart. Two sons, Francis and William Stone, married sisters. Francis Stone married Sarah Monroe and William Stone married Mary Monroe, daughters of William Monroe, who owned a mill on what is now called Troy Creek. One of Sarah and Mary Monroe's sisters married John Payne. One of William Stone's granddaughters, Mildred Richard Stone, married Thomas Wroe Weedon, nephew of General George Weedon, of the Revolution." "The Pannells and Stones owned land on Troy Creek, just below the William Monroe Mill. Payne lived at Cedar Hill." The record reads: "Order'd that Rober t Garrett John Leigh & VINCENT VASS or any two of them do meet on the Second Fr yday in December next and go in Processon of & see all and ever y Persons Land between Tarsatyan and great Heartquake swamps..." On 30 Sep 1751, VINCENT VASS appears in the vestry book of St ratton Major parish K&Q when he was paid 400 lbs of tobacco fo r being the reader of the Upper Church. On 17 Nov 1752, VINCENT VASS appears in the vestry book of St ratton Major parish K&Q when he was paid 1200 lbs of tobacco fo r being the reader of the Upper Church. On 7 Jul 1753, VINCENT VASS of Stratton Major parish K&Q exec uted a deed of mortage to JOHN VASS of South Farnham parish, Ess ex County. The property involved was a 250 acres tract in South Farnham par ish. The deed of mortgage was signed by JOHN VASS Jr. and HENR Y VASS. The land was described as adjacent to and bounded by the land of Cap t. William Beale, Mr. Rich. Adams and Mr. John Boughton. On 5 Oct 1753, VINCENT VASS appears in the vestry book of Str atton Major parish K&Q when he was paid 716 lbs of tobacco for b eing the reader of the Upper Church. This same vestry record notes that Griffit h Elrington was paid 484 lbs of tobacco for "Officiating as Cl k in the absence of VINCENT VASS from the 15th April till the 9th Day of 7ber 22 Sun days." Clk refers to "clerk" a term sometimes applied to a recto r in the early days. 7ber is short for September. From this, it appears that VASS wa s absent from the Upper Church of Stratton Major parish from 1 5 April to 9 Sep 1753. It may be of interest to note that the will of JOHN VASS of Essex w as dated 13 Jan 1753 and proved 15 Sep 1755. On 7 Oct 1754, VINCENT VASS appears in the vestry book of Str atton Major parish K&Q when he was paid 100 lbs of tobacco as th e reader of the Upper Church. On 26 Sep 1755, VINCENT VASS appears in the vestry book of St ratton Major parish K&Q when he was paid 850 lbs of tobacco as t he "late" reader of the Upper Church for 8 1/2 months. This suggests he left th e church (or perhaps died) in about June of 1755. On 17 Feb 1759, VINCENT VASS and WINNIFRED his wife of Esse x County, conveyed 240 acres of land to HENRY VASS of Essex. From the M&B description,it is clear this is the same tract lying in Sout h Farnham parish which Vass bought from JOHN VASS and wife Rache l in March 1750/51. The Essex deeds show that this same 240 acre tract wa s sold on 20 Jan 1787 by HENRY VASS and wife Catherine of Chris t Church parish, Middlesex County, to John Beale of South Farnham parish, Essex C ounty. On 21 Jul 1764, VINCENT VASS of K&Q and William Lyne of same executed an indenture deed to Archibald Ritchie of Essex fo r a 245 acre plantation, including slaves, household goods, etc. which were p urchased at auction from the estate of Nicholas Pamplin of K&Q. | Vass, Vincent (I1573)

Mary Shanks who being first sworn doth upon her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of congress passed July 7th 1838 entitled an act “granting half pay and pensions to certain widows” That she is the widow of John Shanks who was a private in the Army of the Revolution as was proven in his papers proving his service filed in the War Department which are ? as part of this declaration. That she was born in Halifax County Virginia on the 17th day of January 1769. That her father then moved to Mecklenburg County VA and then to Granville County N. Carolina. That soon afterwards she was married to John Shanks, who was a pensioner of the United States for many years and who was also know to her as a revolutionary soldier when she was married. That she was married on her birthday, when she was twenty -four years old which was on the 17th of January 1793. That there was no preacher convenient in her own County and State and that she went over the line to the neighboring County of Mecklenburg where she was married by a man and preacher by the name of William Goodin. That she never did and does not now know where the license was obtained. That the marriage was recorded in her father’s record but that she does not now know where that record now is. That by the advice of her Attorney she has made numerous inquiries and endeavored to ascertain where it now is, but that she has been unsuccessful and she supposes that the record has been lost. That she moved out to Kentucky with her husband in the year 1815 and settled in Madison County. When they ever afterwards lived. That her husband John Shanks died on the 5th day of April 1829. That he was a pensioner for many years and drew $96 a year up to the time of his death. That she was not married to him prior to his leaving service, but the marriage took place previous to the first of January 1794 as at the time above stated. Her maiden name was Mary Christopher. Mary (her X mark) Shanks The above declaration was subscribed and sworn to by the petitioner before me one of the Justices as aforesaid and I further certify that the said Mary Shanks is old and weak and it would be impracticable from her bodily infirmity for her to come to Richmond to attend the County Court and further that the petitioner is a person whose recollection is good and her mind does not seem to be impaired as much as in the case with women of her age generally and that she is a woman to be believed upon oath and of good character. Susannah Wright may have lived in Nash Co. On 31 March 1779, Susannah Wright of Nash Co. deeded 30 acres of land containing a plantation lying between Williams and Gum branches to Mark Mason. Arthur Arrington, Martha Arrington, Elizabeth Arrington, witnessed the deed, which was recorded in April Court 1779. Nash Co. Deed Book A, p, 59. For future research, the Arrington family was allied with the Wright and Culpepper families in Nash Co. | Wright, Sussanah (I3290)

| 731 | Taylor Sanders appears in the 1800 census (p. 146) and 1810 census (pg. 69) for Caswell Co. Taylor Sanders witnessed a deed from Jepthah Rice to Mason Sanders in 1790. Caswell Co. Deed Book H, p. 195. In 1793, Taylor Sanders purchased 52 acres from Solomon Hornbuckle Caswell Co. Deed Book H, pp. 178-79. In 1800, Taylor purchased 50 acres on Hogan’s Creek from Mason Sanders Caswell Co. Deed Book I, pg. 279. This appears to be the same tract Mason purchased in 1799 from Timothy White. Caswell Co. Deed Book L, p. 89. Taylor Sanders granted warrant (#2089) for land in Jackson Co., TN on 13 Aug. 1825. | Sanders, Taylor (I1426)

| 732 | The 1850 census lists Mary Young, 65, as head of household. She is living with her daughter Emily, 26, and son Robert, 22. Therefore, it appears that Mary is the mother of Julia Ann Young. Emily (b. 1824) and Robert (b. 1828) are siblings of Julia Ann Young. | Mary (I3936)

| 733 | The 1850 census taken 7 Sept. 1850 gives an age of 40 for Deborah {Page) Scott. If the stated age is correct, she was born between 8 Sept. 1809 and 7 Sept. 1810. The earliest date is only three months prior to Whitehead’s marriage to Betsy Wright in Dec. 1809. Therefore, it seems most likely that Deborah was born sometime around Sept. 1810, which is nine months following Whitehead’s marriage to Betsey Wright. Deborah (Page) Scott is living with her husband Azariah in the 1850 census. The household includes their children William L. Scott 6, Martha F. Scott 5, John A. Scott 3, and Sallie A. Scott 1. 90 year old mary Scott is also living in the household and is presumed to be azariah’s mother. 1850 Caswell Co., North Carolina Census, Roll M432_623, p. 202. Deborah (Page) Scott is not recorded in the Caswell Co census in 1860. Howevver, several of her children can be found living in other households. In the 1860 census, a 16 year old W.L. Scott and 6 year old A.W. Scott are living in the household of John Manly, who was the administrator and brother in law of Azariah Scott. W. L. Scott appears to be the son of Azariah who is recorded in the 1850 census. A. W. Scott appears to be another son of Azariah who was born after the 1850 census. An Azariah Scott is listed in the John Manly household in the 1870 census. A 14 year old M. Scott (Martha F ?) is listed in the household of Hannah Cannon (Kennon). It is not known what relationship, if any, existed between Hannah Cannon and the Scott family. However, both families lived in the Hogan Creek area of Caswell Co. 1860 Caswell Co., North Carolina Census, Roll M653_891, p. 310, 334. It is presumed that Deborah Scott died before her husband. | Page, Deborah (I908)

| 749 | The children of Aaron Saunders are identified in a petition to Sale Land filed during the administration of the estate of Aaron Saunders. His grandchildren by daughter Ann and son Ransom are also identified. Aaron Saunders appears in the 1800 census in Caswell Col. (Roll 31, p 148). He is listed as being 16 - 25 years old. A female of the same age, presumably his wife, is also in the household. The following entry is for Eliz. Saunders. She is over 45 and has two young males living at home with her; one under 10 (so husband perhaps still living in 1790 but dead by 1800) and one 10-16. An Abner Underwood is ;listed on the same page and a Wm. Underwood is listed on the previous page. Aron Sanders appears on the 1810 census in Caswell Co. NC with Mason Sanders. (Roll 38, p. 68) His household includes 1 male under 10, 1 male 26-45, 2 females under 10, and 1 female 26-45. Taylor Sanders appears on the previous page. Taylor Sanders sold 50 acres on Hogans Creek to Aaron Sanders for 100 pounds on 2 Sept. 1814. The deed was witnessed by James Somers and Mason Sanders. Caswell Co. Deed Book R, p 244. Aaron and his wife Susannah appear in the 1850 census in Caswell Co., NC. Their son-in-law James Combs and daughter Susannah Combs are living with them. AARON SANDERS was born somewhere in VIRGINIA in 1772-1774. He was in CASWELL CO NORTH CAROLINA by 1800 and died there by 1854, when his estate was settled. He was married in about 1799 (where?) to Susannah GIBBS (c1778- c1853), who had also been born in VA. She was a daughter of the Revolutionary War soldier and pensioner Shadrach GIBBS (c1760-1837), who was b in Halifax Co VA, lived before the war in Spartanburg District SOUTH CAROLINA, and lived after the war in Caswell Co NC (where he remarried 11 May 1785 to EASTER ROBINSON; bondsman was Charles MCINTOSH), Union District SC, Wilson Co TENNESSEE, Robertson Co TN and (from 1823) Franklin Co ALABAMA. Two of Aaron and Susannah Sanders's children married children of J. MASON SANDERS (d c1836 Caswell Co NC), m 10 Oct 1808 in Caswell Co NC to Priscilla UNDERWOOD (bondsman Leonard SUTTON) - His children, named in his will, were WILLIAM SANDERS, ANDREW SANDERS, LEROY SANDERS, RICHARD SANDERS, ELIZABETH, ANNY SMITH, LYDIA, POLLY SARTIN and "AMY" [sic - she was also called OMAH]. The will says that Elizabeth, Amy and Lydia were the three youngest daughters. There are strong hints that Aaron Saunders, Mason Sanders, Smith Sanders and Taylor Sanders who all lived in Caswell Co NC, are brothers. Smith Sanders died in 1807. | Sanders, Aaron (I1362)
